Brey, 7th edition (March 23, 2005), Prentice Hall, ISBN: 0131195069 <-- RETURN TO TOP Course objectives and outcomes This course is an introduction to microprocessors and microprocessor systems. The class covers foundations of microprocessor architecture, assembly language programming and interfacing of peripheral devices. Upon completion of this course, a student: Will have basic knowledge of microprocessor architecture. Will have working knowledge of the instruction set for 80x86 microprocessors Will be able to write and debug assembly programs that meet requested specifications Will have basic knowledge of the memory and I/O interfaces, address decoding, and bus transactions. Will have working knowledge of the interrupt-based control model, including software and hardware interrupts.  <-- RETURN TO TOP Tentative course outline Introduction to the Intel family of microprocessors The 8086 architecture, programing models Data types, data representations, instruction set, addressing modes Assembly Language Programs, Linkers and Loaders Memory interface, I/O interface Hardware and software interrupts, Interrupt service routines <-- RETURN TO TOP Grading Policy             Homework                            – 30.00%             Attendance and Quizzes        - 10.00%             Exam 1                               - 15.00%             Exam 2                               - 15.00%             Final Exam (Comprehensive) - 30.00%  <-- RETURN TO TOP Homework policy Homework for this course will consists or reading assignments, problem sets and assembly language development assignments. Homework will be assigned and given almost every week. You are required to do all homework.  All homework will be due at the beginning of class on the instructors desk. Each homework set will age 10% per working day late  (i.e. Monday through Friday). This means that the maximum grade possible decreases at 10% per day until the homework assignment is worth zero after ten days unless a prior arrangement with the instructor has been made.  <-- RETURN TO TOP Exams Two Exams during the semster and Final exam will be given. The Final Exam will be Comprehensive, i.e. cover everything we have done during the semester.  <-- RETURN TO TOP Quizzes Quizzes will be given at the beginning or at the end of the class and cover either homework reading assignments or in-class material.  Quizzes (5% of the grade) will be used to determine attendance (5% of the grade). <-- RETURN TO TOP Academic integrity You are encouraged to consult the instructor if you have any questions on homework or exams. The homework  and exams are expected to be individual work, completed without any “help” of your classmates.  Handing in work that was jointly prepared and/or copied will be considered plagiarism and will be handled according to the University regulations.
